The Met Gala formally known as the Costume Institute Gala s an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute in New York City. I didn’t know much about this event apart from the extravagant costumes, looks and celebrities that attend and ofcourse, “the Jay-Z, Beyonce & Solange elevator incident”.But a little bit of curiosity will lead you to understand that it is more that just the trivial things. It is a celebration of art, fashion and creativity combined.
“It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night since guest are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit.”
The theme for 2015 is the China: Through the Looking Glass. The Costume Institute’s spring 2015 exhibition, China: Through the Looking Glass, is on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 7 through August 16, 2015. Presented in the Museum’s Chinese Galleries and Anna Wintour Costume Center, the exhibition explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. In this collaboration between The Costume Institute and the Department of Asian Art, high fashion is juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, including films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery.
It’s no wonder everyone makes a big deal out of the costumes because this is what the Gala aims to commemorate. Some of this year’s highlight costumes are from the usual media suspects. The likes of Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Rihanna and probably some your your favorite A-List celebrities too but do check out some of the awesome costumes from previous exhibition galleries from reputable fashion designers that may not make their way onto the red carpet.
